1 Gigawatt-hour (GWh)

is the amount of electricity needed to power 100 average households for 1 year.

Guelph’s existing groundwater supply will be at or close to its

maximum servicing capability

by approximately 2015.

If 67 homes

in Guelph each save 15,000 kWhe (~1 GWhe) in natural gas and electricity per year, each household would reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by about 3.5 tonnes per year!

If

18,000 households

in Guelph move to using low-flow toilets, the community can save 1 Gigalitre of water per year.

Guelph is one of the largest cities in Canada that is

dependent solely on groundwater.

684,216m3 of natural gas

could be save in Guelph by installing low flow showerheads and faucet aerators.

What is GIG?

Green Impact Guelph (GIG) is a community-wide initiative that aims to accelerate household energy and water conservation. Guelph Environmental Leadership (GEL) coordinates the project with the support of various different partners each year.GIG began with the distribution of 16,000 conservation kits across the City of Guelph. The project continues to evolve as learning is gained and successes are achieved. This year GIG is focusing on conserving water in apartment buildings in Guelph.
