Green Impact Guelph (GIG) 2007/2008
GIG began in 2007 with a vision of achieving massive savings in water and energy in the community. The scale that GIG aims to make changes at is the Gigawatt-hour (1,000 kWh) and the Gigalitre (1,000,000 litres)!
In order to take steps toward this ambitious goal GIG was launched with a community-wide effort to promote conservation. This included holding its first Ecomarket (30 vendors and 2,000 participants), the distribution of 16,000 conservation kits and 14,000 CFL bulbs door-to-door. Over 200 conservation action pledges were made and an online survey was taken by 300 residents to identify behaviours and barriers in household electricity, gas, water and transportation conservation. Conservation action plans were also developed with residents and community leaders in every ward of the City.
